Students in grades 7 – 12 at publicly funded schools are eligible to apply.

The Minister's Student Advisory Council (MSAC) is a group of approximately 60 students who come from publicly funded schools across Ontario.

Members share their ideas and advice with the Minister of Education on a variety of topics about our publicly funded education system.

The council celebrates student diversity and seeks all perspectives and experiences.

October 11th is the International Day of the Girl


In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

Too many girls around the world face challenges that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Statistics show that girls everywhere face higher rates of violence, poverty and discrimination than boys. In many parts of the world, girls do not have access to education or adequate health care.

This day promotes equal treatment and opportunities for girls in areas like law, nutrition, health, education, training, and freedom from violence and abuse. This important day shines a light on the serious barriers faced by girls and helps to showcase the work girls themselves are doing to bring about changes in their communities and around the world.

Tomorrow Rosie the Riveter bandanas will be distributed in the cafeteria at lunch time in recognition of the day.

Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!

Welcome everyone to an exciting new school year at Assumption College Catholic High School! Our school is blessed with an incredible teaching and support staff that is second to none. We are proud to offer you the best in Catholic education.
Our school is supported by a vibrant school council that is made up of dedicated parents and community volunteers. School Council will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, September 27th at 6:30pm in the school’s library. New volunteers are always welcome and you do not have to be elected to attend the meetings.

Congratulations go out to our elected leaders of our Student Council for the 2017 – 2018 school year: Christine Napigkit, Prime Minister and Deep Sandu, Deputy Prime Minister. The Student Council does a tremendous job of enhancing the life of our school!
We would like to welcome all of our new families to our wonderful school. Make the most of these important years in your children’s lives. We have some outstanding new additions to our staff this semester. Please join us in welcoming teachers:  Jenna Borrelli, Fabiola Bresolin, Chad Brown, Anacleto D’Alessandro, Cindy Fragoso, Gina Loupos, Andrew MacLeod,
Jasna Naccarato and Lukas Romeo. We also welcome educational assistance, Madonna Hill. We hope that they all have a successful semester at Assumption!

Fentanyl Pamphlet for Parents and Caregivers

This is an important message to bring to your attention the appearance of an extremely dangerous drug which has the potential to become a serious problem in our community.

Fentanyl is a substance which is often cut in to other drugs like cocaine or ecstasy, and it can be 40 to 50 times more toxic than heroin. Local police agencies are warning their communities that people can be consuming fentanyl without even knowing it, and that consuming it even once could be fatal.

We do not believe that fentanyl is a problem in our schools at this time, but local law enforcement agencies have reported an increase in overdose incidents in the area. Along with those agencies, the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board is taking a pro-active approach by warning our students and their parents about the dangers of consuming any substances which may contain fentanyl.

We have posted a very useful electronic pamphlet below which contains details about fentanyl, overdose symptoms to watch for, and online resources where you can get more information. Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Summer Student Posting - 2017


Grounds Crew Leader (Posting #2–2017)
(July 2017 to August 2017 - 7 weeks)

Duties:
  • The Leader will supervise the Grounds Crew Students and report to the Supervisor/Foreperson of Operations Services.  The Leader is responsible for scheduling and coordinating all work assignments, tracking attendance, verifying and submitting timesheets
  • Maintain landscaped areas, mulching, edging, pruning, weeding, etc.  at various school locations throughout Windsor-Essex County
  • Responsible for the safety and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Maintain daily written records of work related activities
  • Ensuring the safety of all Grounds Crew Students
  • Ensuring that all Health & Safety practices are followed 
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12, College or University Student with a focus on horticulture & landscaping & returning to school full time in the fall
  • Landscaping experience is an asset
  • Leadership skills
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proof of a valid driver’s licence in good standing and access to a vehicle for travel throughout Windsor-Essex County

(July 2017 to August 2017 - 7 weeks)

Duties
·         The Grounds Crew students will be responsible for maintaining the landscaped areas at all board locations 
·         Weeding, pruning, edging, trimming and mulch replacement
·         Responsible for the efficient handling of tools and equipment
·         General labour

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12, College or University Student with a focus on horticulture and landscaping & returning to school full time in the fall
·         Landscaping experience is an asset
·         Grounds Crew students will be required to work well in a team  or alone
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Proof of a valid driver’s licence in good standing and access to a vehicle for travel throughout Windsor-Essex County
 Facilities Services Student Assistant (Posting #4 – 2017)
(June 2017 to August 2017 – 7 weeks)

Duties:
·         Conduct water samplings at all Board location, input laboratory results and prepare required report for each school.   Update binders with Ministry of the Environment documents
·         Perform testing of laboratory fumehoods and chemical storage cabinets equipped with mechanical ventilation
·         Assist with the implementation of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System)
·         Inventory (collect name plate information) of Board assets (mechanical and electrical equipment, custodial equipment, etc.)
·         Create and label board assets
·         Gather drawings, preventative maintenance schedules, and original equipment manufacturing documents for Board maintenance procedures
·         Entering information into the CMMS
·         Working with Maintenance and Utility Staff
·         Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12, College or University Student with a Science or Engineering background & returning to school full time in the fall
  • Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office
·         Must be self motivated  and  able to work independently
·         Must be physically fit and capable of performing tasks which include heavy lifting
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Proof of a valid driver’s licence in good standing and access to a vehicle for travel throughout Windsor-Essex County

Survey for Parents and Students

 The Ministry of Education is committed to improving Indigenous education in Ontario, improving student achievement and well-being, and closing the achievement gap between Indigenous students and all students. In 2007, the Ontario Ministry of Education launched the Ontario First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework (the Framework). The Framework guides the Ministry of Education, school boards and schools as they work together to improve and support the achievement and well-being of Indigenous students who attend Ontario’s provincially-funded elementary and secondary schools, and to increase the knowledge and awareness of all students about Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives and contributions.

The Ministry has made a commitment to release a progress report on the implementation of the Framework every three years. Progress Reports were released in 2009 and 2013. The next progress report on the implementation of the Framework is scheduled to be released in Fall 2017. To inform the development of this report, the Ministry is hoping to hear from students, parents/guardians and family members, educators, and First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities and organizations about the progress that has been made in Indigenous education.

Congrats to the Model UN Team

Congratulations to the Model UN team for their 3rd successful conference at the University of Windsor over the weekend! Competing against students from high schools in Windsor and Essex County, the team brought back 5 awards after 2 long days of debate and negotiation. A special congratulations goes out to the following team members for their extensive research, writing, and overall diplomacy skills:

Honourable Mention- Sameer Shergill representing Woodrow Wilson in the Crisis Committee.
Best Delegate- Uygur Tepe representing Joseph Stalin in the Crisis Committee.
Outstanding Delegate- Matt Wiedemann representing Ireland in the Security Council.
Best Delegate- Rory Sutcliffe representing Great Britain in the Security Council.
Outstanding Journalist- Suzie Sawicki representing the New York Times.

Parent Information Fair Thursday, April 20

PIC has organized our Parent Information Fair to be held on Thursday, April 20 at the Ciociaro Club. 

This event is part of our Regional Parent Reaching Out Grant.

The goal is to host local agencies, programs and organizations all in one place so parents can attend to see what resources and services are available to assist them and their school aged children.

Confederation Cup Debate Tournament

This past weekend, the national semi-finals for the Confederation Cup Debate Tournament took place in Toronto.  This tournament involved all the top qualifying teams from Ontario and Quebec. Through 5 rounds of debate, Assumption's Evan Tanovich and Taylor Christou ended up in 3rd place overall which earns them a berth in the national final.  They are among 4 teams in the Ontario/Quebec region and will be facing the 4 qualifiers from the Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax regions for the national championships in Ottawa.  Individually, their speaker scores were 5th and 6th place in the tournament.  No other team had both members in the top 6.

The team, which also included Mirna Eshaya and Deep Sandhu, racked up wins against powerhouse pairings from Upper Canada College, WOSS and U of T Private School, among others.

This amazing accomplishment is a testament to the great education they've received across a range many courses.  Topics included Canadian content in art/literature curriculum, subsidies for the energy sector and recall elections.  A special thanks goes to Kim Pearce for her help in research and constructing arguments for two topics which examined the government's ongoing role in providing reparations for our Aboriginal population.

Mirna literally spent the afternoon in Kathleen Wynne's desk at Queen's Park.  I promise we didn't leave behind any notes!!

FNMIEAO The Moccasin Project





















FNMIEAO is proud to endorse this wonderful new and important initiative called The Moccasin Project.


This began out of Akinomaagaye Gaamik (community lodge in Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation) in response to the horrific state of child apprehension taking place in Manitoba, after listening to First Nations Family Advocate Cora Morgan and Grand Chief Derek Nepinak share the realities that they are faced with.


The Moccasin Project is a great way to become informed and take action on the current issues that continue to impact Indigenous Peoples.  Many schools and community groups have already taken part.


FNMIEAO was proud to share The Moccasin Project at the recent National Education Roundtable for the TRC held in Calgary that we attended.

Quigg International Career Day March 8th

There will be a Quigg International booth at the Windsor Campus of St. Clair College in the Career Services Area (room 274) from 11:00am until 1:00pm.

Career Days provide our students with an opportunity to meet with select employers to explore career opportunities, application processes, and learn more about companies who hire. St. Clair College happy to be able to increase our industry engagement and to present these employment opportunities to our students.

Quigg International is a machine builder and integrator company that specializes in Industrial Automation for Hot Stamping, Welding, Assembly and Special Machinery for custom applications. Quigg International is looking to recruit for positions such as Millwrights, Electricians, CNC and General Machinists, Mechanical & Controls Design, Machinery Fabrication, Technicians, and Welders. This is a great opportunity for students to stop by and learn more about what Quigg International has to offer.



COMPASS SURVEY 2017

Our school will be participating in the 2016-2017 COMPASS Survey. Researchers from the University of Waterloo will ask students to complete a 35-minute questionnaire about healthy eating, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, smoking, alcohol and marijuana-use, and bullying. The survey is confidential and no names are written on the surveys. This means that the name of your child will not be linked with their survey responses. The surveys will be stored at the University of Waterloo and only research staff will have access to the completed surveys. The survey responses will help researchers gather details about youth health, and this information will be shared with our school to help improve school policies and practices related to health. Both the school board and our school have given approval to conduct the study. The survey has been repeated once each year for the past four years, following the same students. This survey has been reviewed by, and has received ethics clearance from the University of Waterloo's Office of Research Ethics. There are no known or anticipated risks to participation in this survey.

On March 22nd, students in grades 9 to 12 with parental permission, and who themselves agree to participate, will be asked to take part in the survey. Students are free to withdraw from the survey at any time, without penalty.

If you do not wish your child to participate, please call the COMPASS Data Collection Coordinator, Rachel Reel, at 1-844-819-8388 or contact Patti Mouland at the school office by March 22nd. Consent will be assumed unless you notify us otherwise.
